Good morning! It is September 22 and it’s time for our Daily Dose of Good News which is from Genesis 28:10-17. So take a breath. Look around you and absorb your surroundings. Here we go…
Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Here ends the reading.
I love this passage for today. Because, as you might have noticed, we’re in the midst of a pandemic. And it’s hard. The pandemic adds lots of waves to it, which add complexity, or that add difficulty, or hurdles that we didn’t use to have – that we now suddenly need to figure out and maneuver and work with… and let’s just own that that’s difficult. So, what’s awesome about this passage is that Jacob realizes that God is with him in all of that. God says that. God stood beside him in that space where Jacob didn’t even realize He was there. And God says “Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Whether Jacob realized it or not, didn’t matter, God was with him in all of that. Whether we realize it or not, God is with us in all that we face. God is with us right now. God is with you wherever you’re at, right in this moment. Whether that’s in a kitchen, or outside, or in a parking lot, or wherever you are – in a garage working, whatever you’re doing. God is with you in that. Jacob is astounded and says “Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it!” So I encourage you to look around today, in your surroundings and find the space that feels peaceful to you and feel God present. And if you don’t feel God present, recognize that God is there! And we can praise God for that.
It reminds me of a song I sang over and over as a kid. I grew up in church and I sang this song with my best friend, almost every Sunday, and Caroline was our piano player, and she was like a second mother to me. One of her favorite songs for us to sing was called “Surely the Presence.” I would give credit to the author – if I knew who it was. But I will sing it for you now and I hope you all sing it to yourselves today. And that you just sort of rest and marinate in it.
Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place
I can feel His mighty power and His grace
I can hear the brush of angel’s wings
I see glory on each face
Surely the presence of the Lord
Is in this place.
So, I ask you just to rest in that. And just to look around at wherever you’re at today and see where God’s presence might be there for you. (Pans the backyard). Maybe it’s in the plants around you, maybe it’s in your surroundings, maybe it’s in whatever it looks like where you’re at. But just know that God loves you and God is present with you. Find a spot and feel God and praise God for that. Have a great day everybody. Bye-bye.
