By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, of whom he had been told, “It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named for you.” He considered the fact that God is able even to raise someone from the dead—and figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. By faith Isaac invoked blessings for the future on Jacob and Esau. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, “bowing in worship over the top of his staff.” By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his burial. (Hebrews 11:17-22)
Following manner of Hebrews today,
Let’s celebrate the good news God gives us
Through faith within our own cloud of witnesses
Which in turn inspires our faith as well.
Hebrews goes to the traditional standard-bears within ancestors of the faith
By faith, Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son
Confident that would someone bring life again out of the situation.
By faith, Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau.
By faith, Jacob blessed the sons of Joseph.
By faith, Joseph gave credit for all blessings to the God of the exodus.
While those ancestors in the faith certainly remain
traditional standard-bearers within our family of faith,
Each of us has our own cloud of witnesses
Whose faith has been inspiring to our own
As individuals before God.
Today I’d invite you to join me
In naming those in your life
Whose faith through the years
Has been inspiring to your faith.
Perhaps a parent or parents
A special Sunday school teacher or two
Youth group advisors
A college professor
Friends who have demonstrated deep faith in the face of tremendous suffering …
A serious illness
The untimely death of a loved one
Tensions within family.
Even those in your life who, without any requirement for doing so
have stood with you in your own time of suffering.
By faith, they have help form faith within us.
Reflect a moment on your cloud of witness
After which I’ll conclude our reflection with a prayer of thanksgiving.
We give thanks for your Holy Spirit
Which brings life and faith to your people.
Especially today, we lift up to you
Those in our own lives,
Whose faith has inspired, encouraged, emboldened our own lives of faith
Giving us the hope of your mercy and salvation
Even amid uncertain times like these.
In Jesus’ name. Amen
