Such is the rhythm of life in God’s kingdom:
- Jesus reaches out and calls to an outsider by the roadway
- Trusting in Jesus affirmation, the outsider it transformed to a follower on Jesus’ way toward life for all.
Jesus reaches the blind beggar sitting by the roadway through the word of mouth by which the blind beggar had learned what to expect from Jesus. Trusting Jesus enough to persist in his request that Jesus have mercy on him, Jesus indeed calls to Timaeus and announces that his faith has made him well. And immediately, with his sight restored, Timaeus follows Jesus now on the roadway toward the cross and resurrection by which Jesus will reveal his reach beyond the grave toward eternal life for all.
The rhythm of life in the God’s kingdom shows up In events of the Protestant Reformation that we celebrate this month as well. While wrestling with his own experience by the roadway as a sinner … unable to achieve his own way back onto the roadway with Jesus
according to works prescribed by the church of his day, Luther came to understand that actually the whole church had run off the roadway focusing as it was on merits and privilege as the way to righteousness with God.
Yet Jesus, now raised from the dead in perfectly complete life with God always, reaches out and called Luther and other reformers, affirming them even while counted as unworthy by standards maintained by the church reminding them through the Word that the righteous shall life by faith alone. Desperately trusting in that grace, Jesus transformed and restored them to follow again on the roadway with him for the restoration and life of all.
And I think we’d all have to admit that life by the roadway is the real experience for all of us as some point … whether by circumstances of poor health … under-employment … broken relationships … addiction or anxiety … and even the consequences of our own sin.
And to be sure all of us know and love people who feel as though they are being left by the roadway as well due to one circumstance or another.
This morning I invite you and those you know and love to trust the rhythm of life in the kingdom of God. Through this very Word and through family and friends caring in Jesus’ name Jesus is reaching out and calling to you and everyone by the roadway, affirming you and all whom others might consider less than worth. In your desperation, trust in Jesus’ perfect grace and Jesus will transform and restore you to follow him on the roadway again toward life for all.
