Good morning. Today is Friday, January 14th and it’s time for our Daily Dose of Good News.
Think about the best party you’ve ever been to. Was it a birthday party? A wedding? A retirement party? An anniversary party? When a party is happening, we often don’t want the fun to end. We want the fun to keep going! Wedding parties in the Bible show us what the Kingdom of God is like. The Kingdom of God is a celebration that never ends!
In today’s story, “Wedding At Cana,” Jesus, his disciples, and Jesus’ mother were guests at a wedding in Cana. Cana was in Galilee (MAP). Jesus’ mother noticed that there was no wine left at the party. No wine left at a party meant that a celebration would not go on. Of course, they looked to Jesus to help. Jesus saw six large stone jars near a table. Each of these six stone jars probably held 20-30 gallons of water. That’s a LOT of water! Jesus told the servers to fill the jars with cold water. And then, to everyone’s surprise, Jesus miraculously turned the water into wine. The party could go on!
Let’s read the story in John 2:1-11 or in the Spark Story Bible on pages 410-415.
The Wedding at Cana
2 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
We are in the church season of Epiphany and Epiphany means “to show that something is true.” The star showed the Wise Men the way to find Baby Jesus. And, the star showed that Jesus the messiah had been born. In today’s story, Jesus showed folks that He was the Son of God by performing a miracle. Turning water into wine was Jesus’ first miracle. We see the abundance of God’s love in our lives.
The next time you’re at a party, I hope you’ll remember that the Kingdom of God will be the best party that will never end! How great will that be!?
Please pray with me.
We celebrate you, Jesus,
For your loving care,
For your miracles,
For the gifts you give us each day.
We celebrate you, Jesus.
We thank you for the abundance that you share with us always. Amen.
I hope you have a wonderful day!
