Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture:
“See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the very head of the corner,”
“A stone that makes them stumble,
and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:4-10)
Living Stones of God’s Residence
I have always found this passage to be such a compelling affirmation.
As we will be exploring together around my sermon on Sunday,
This passage in 1 Peter extols the residence of God now
Among those whom God chooses to be a people
According to their faith in Christ Jesus
Not simply for their own security, salvation and benefit
But in order to proclaim the mighty acts of God in Christ Jesus
Who reveals the security, salvation and benefit of all people.
Where once God was held to reside in the Law of the 10 commandments
Given to the people of God’s initial promise blessing
The people of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Next God was held to reside in the ark the sheltered the commandments
And then the tabernacle and then the Temple built with stones.
That is until God became flesh and dwelt among us
In the person of Jesus from Nazareth.
By his death and resurrection, he is revealed to have been
The 10 commandment in the flesh
A living stone of the temple
And now we are invited to follow him
As living stones to proclaim the mighty acts of God
Whereby God resides among us.
And I just love to imagine where all you living stones
are being strewn throughout the day
At home, at work, at school, at the store, in the neighborhood…
And the opportunity you have
to proclaim and demonstrate the grace and mercy of God in Christ Jesus
Which you enjoy not only for yourselves
But for all people on which it shines.
So indeed friends …
You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim
the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
As God resides within you living stones today. Amen
