HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH
A Daily Dose of Good News
Monday, March 30, 2020
Pastor Steve’s devotion is offered in person today at https://youtu.be/26KdB9tZSEs
And throughout the week at the Daily Dose tab at the top of the church webpage: www.engagedbygrace.org
On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul was holding a discussion with them; since he intended to leave the next day, he continued speaking until midnight. There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” Then Paul went upstairs, and after he had broken bread and eaten, he continued to converse with them until dawn; then he left. Meanwhile they had taken the boy away alive and were not a little comforted. (Acts 20:7-12)
Not a Little Comforted
Good morning, friends.
For the first time since we’ve been broadcasting the Daily Dose of Good News
I won’t be coming to you live at 10:30,
And the reason falls right in line with the message from our lesson for today.
And I have to tell you,
As a preacher I take not a little comfort from this story
As in, I take quite a lot of comfort like the disciples
Thrilled that the sleepy boy could be revived after his three-story fall.
While I feel bad for the little boy,
I take not a little comfort in knowing that
Somebody fell asleep while the Apostle Paul was preaching!?!
And if a preacher as prestigious as Paul could put someone to sleep
It can happen to the best of us preachers!?!?!
What’s even more masterful about the story …
(And I’m going to attribute this to the Holy Spirit more than Paul)
Is how Paul took the moment of disruption and disrespect for the Gospel being preached
And turned it into an opportunity to demonstrate the Word that he was preaching!
While Paul is preaching about eternal and immutable life in Christ Jesus our Lord
With him raised from the dead
The boy falls from a third-story window … lifeless.
That’s what I call a children’s sermon moment!?!?
When Paul learns what happened,
He immediately stops his speaking
And continues his preaching by reviving the boy by the glory of God
To the delight of all those around
Who found themselves not a little comforted.
I won’t be speaking with you live this morning at 10:30
Because I’m going to be preaching the good news with pastors across the synod
On a video conference all for the purpose of discussing
How we can mark the passion of Christ in Holy Week starting Sunday
While still not meeting together in our church buildings.
While we have fallen from business as usual
Three stories and then some maybe,
The Holy Spirit is going to raise us up
To witness Jesus crucified and raised
In some new and meaningful ways.
Be watching for those details.
After the video conference this morning
Holy Trinity staff is video conferencing this afternoon
To make our community-wide Holy Week plans to come.
Together we’ll be not a little comforted
By the life of Jesus that the Holy Spirit will raise among us
No matter what trouble befalls us.
Be safe. Be well.
