A Daily Dose of Good News

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true, for the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place. See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me; but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your comrades the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” (Revelation 22:1-9)
Your Soul’s Eye
After todays Daily Dose of Good News,
I’d invite you to take some time to see
What the angel is showing your soul’s eye
About the future God has in store for you.
Here in the book of Revelation,
Written to several communities of faith in the early church
Who were under great persecution for their faith
The angel shows a vision of the refreshment, assurance, and peace
Refreshment in the water of life …
perhaps a remembrance of baptism?
Assurance with God and the Lamb enthroned at the source of the river …
Perhaps Jesus reigning already now in his resurrection?
Peace extending from the tree of life with twelve kinds of fruit …
Perhaps the restoration of all 12 tribes of Israel representing the wholeness of God’s family?
Whatever the persecutions that were confronting them,
This vision declares those travails do not define them
And will not be the end of them.
Their future is sure thanks to the Lord God
Whose reign outlast even the moon and sun.
The Lord God who will reign forever and ever.
Friends in Christ, neither will our present travails define us
Nor be the end of us either.
The eternal love celebrated in our baptisms
By the Lord God who sits enthroned at the very foundations of the world
And calls all of us together in the wholeness and peace
Ordained by the Son who is raised into the future that awaits all of us
Where he reigns forever and ever.
Now open your soul’s eye today to see what the angel shows you beyond the travail.
The angel is showing me a Thanksgiving that will be different and disappoints
Yet special in its own quiet and intimate way.
The angel is showing me the application of a vaccine that helps keep people well.
She’s showing me medical workers finally able to rest and sleep long and deep.
Showing me friends and family falling into each others arms for a long embrace.
The angel is showing the people of God raising shouts of thanks and praise to God
As they gather again at church around Word and sacrament,
And spilling out of the church again as beacons of God’s hope to all the world.
What is the angel showing your soul’s eye?
