You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
For he did not despise or abhor
the affliction of the afflicted;
he did not hide his face from me,
but heard when I cried to him.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
May your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord;
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before him.
For dominion belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.
To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
and I shall live for him.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord,
and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
saying that he has done it. (Psalm 22:23-31)
The Immensity of God’s Love and Grace
Today the Psalmist presents us yet another dimension
To consider the immensity of God’s love and grace
With awe and praise.
In addition to higher than the highest mountain
And deeper than the deepest sea,
Or as far as the east is from the west
And the north is from the south,
The Psalmist extols the love and grace of God
Which is extended to all the dead
Who go down to the dust and sleep in the earth …
As well as everyone who has yet to live,
Those future generations of the people yet unborn.
At the climax of our Lenten season,
We will use this Psalm 22 again
At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday worship service
Before commemorating the three days
In which God actually demonstrates
That immensity of love and grace in Christ Jesus …
Who as a result of his crucifixion
Would join those sleeping in the earth,
And then be raised into the future that awaits all
In the consummation of God’s kingdom.
So friends, we too, can share the confidence of the Psalmist
Who stands sure that God’s love and mercy which reaches that far
Reaches us as well in the midst of our afflictions
Be they physical, emotional, relational, economic, spiritual.
We too, how fear the Lord, have reason to praise
And stand in awe of a God who is that great!
