A Daily Dose of Good News

Therefore, brothers and sisters, holy partners in a heavenly calling, consider that Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses also “was faithful in all God’s house.” Yet Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later. Christ, however, was faithful over God’s house as a son, and we are his house if we hold firm the confidence and the pride that belong to hope. (Hebrews 3:1-6)
Simple and Hard as That
Now there’s a vote of confidence to start your day:
Like Moses, God wants you to know this morning
That you are faithful in all God’s house
When you hold firm the confidence and pride
That belong to hope!
And God knows the world stands in need of your confidence and hope
Within the pandemics of covid and civil unrest these days.
In fact that will be a primary avenue
By which God will get involved in the complications of our day:
Through the lives of faithful people like you
Whom God in Christ Jesus is building into a living house
Of God’s compassion, care and healing for the sick
And God’s justice, mercy and wisdom
For the mutual well being of the whole human race.
Like Moses was built up by the great and central commandments
To love God by doing all you can
to protect and promote the wellbeing of your neighbor
And to protect and propose the wellbeing of your neighbor
as the best way to love your God,
Christ Jesus has embodied those those great and central commandments
Having shared in the presentation of those commandments to God’s house
As part of the triune God for all eternity.
And that means we have benefit of both Moses faithful testimony
And Jesus living witness to what it means to be God’s house —
The world-wide witness to the to the freedom and grace
Accorded by framework of God’s commandments
For all those who are guided by them.
While that’s a pretty high expectation for your day today,
I’d say it’s also pretty good news for the chaotic world as well.
As Richard Boettcher declared in a Council meeting
Some years ago now already,
A funny thing happens when faithful people
Take such expectation for themselves:
People tend to reach those expectations.
And you can take comfort and courage
As you answer that calling today
With the confidence that others join you the same.
While you’re loving God by caring for and building up
The life, reputation and physical circumstance
Of those with whom you share your life,
You can be confident that other present-day Moses like you
Are doing the same among those with whom they leave.
And relationship by relationship
Interaction by interaction
God sees us through the trials of the COVID pandemic
And bit by bit brings reconciliation and restoration
To our social injustice and civil unrest.
Love of God and neighbor.
It’s as simple and hard as that!
